S.R. 55

Merrillville, Indiana

This 1.8-mile section of S.R. 55 was a two-lane roadway with substandard shoulders, high existing and project traffic volumes and an inadequately signalized intersection. We upgraded this key corridor in Merrillville to five lanes—four lanes separated by a continuous, single-lane operating as a bi-directional left-turn lane.

Other improvements included turn lanes, signal modernizations and a new storm sewer system. Environmental mitigations were a key issue along the corridor and required extensive work with a local developer to mitigate the impact on existing wetlands within the site plan.
